Most protesters want people to stop investing in companies that help Israel and the war in Gaza.
On Wednesday, people at UCLA were told to leave or they might get in trouble. The protesters stayed where they were, saying things to support Palestine.
UCLA said that they will have less stuff happening on campus on Thursday and Friday, and all classes will be taught online instead.
The governor of California’s office said that the police took too long to help when a fight happened at UCLA between a group supporting Israel and a group supporting Palestine. The fight happened before the police arrived.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s helper said it was not okay that the police took too long to help.
Police officers removed people who were supporting Palestine from Columbia University.
Government and school leaders say that security guards were quickly sent to the pro-Palestinian camp on Dickson Plaza after fighting started late Tuesday night. Some people who saw what happened said that the guards took a little while to arrive, and there was a short period of time when no one was there to help.
Trump says that protests on college campuses are similar to the riots that happened on January 6th, while Biden is trying to work towards a ceasefire in Gaza to avoid criticism.
The police officers just stayed on the edge of the grass and didn’t move, even when we asked them for help by yelling, said UC Divest at LA, a group that was part of the camp.
After the bad guys made trouble, the people who were upset started to go home two hours later. The police took charge and made sure everything was safe on Wednesday, May 1st.
Governor Newsom said that it’s not okay to be violent or break the law when you’re speaking your mind. Everyone has the right to speak up, but not if it means hurting others or causing damage.
He said that the people who did something wrong should be punished, like being put in jail or getting kicked out of school. According to a newspaper, there were only a few UCLA police officers there and they left because there were too many people in the crowd.
The police had to ask for help from other police officers in California and Los Angeles to help them with the problem. It took three hours for all the police officers to work together and fix the situation.
Columbia University has stopped some students from protesting.
A big fight happened at a school at night in the US, right after the police in New York made some students leave a building they were protesting in.
The protests at Columbia about the fighting in Gaza have led to similar protests at other universities in the country.
Many people, including students at different schools, are protesting in many states. They want schools to stop doing business with Israel and companies involved in the war.
The people in charge of the school said they had lots of security around, but they didn’t want to stop the mostly peaceful protests. On Tuesday, a big group of people supporting Israel came to campus in black clothes and masks and tried to take down the barriers.
The people wearing masks hit the campers with sticks and bats, sprayed them with a strong spray, and ripped down their signs and boards.
People who run colleges are feeling more and more pressure to stop protests supporting Palestine because these protests are happening in more and more places across the country.
A group of people who support Palestine took control of a college campus. The mayor of New York City said that some of the people who were arrested were not students from the college.
